Thailand has changed its visa-exemption rules. Since 15 September 2026, visitors from 60 countries and territories — including all six Gulf states — can stay up to 30 days without a visa, down from 60 days. The change was published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 and replaces the 60-day scheme that had been in place since July 2024.
What changed
- 30 days instead of 60. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain remain on the visa-exempt list, but the stay is now 30 days.
- Tourism only. The new exemption is for tourism. The old scheme also covered short business trips; business visitors should now check whether they need a business (Non-B) visa.
- Fewer countries. The list shrank from 93 to 60 countries and territories, and some nationalities now need a visa before travelling.
- Land borders. Entries over land under the exemption are limited to two per calendar year (air and sea arrivals are not affected).
- Already in Thailand? Travellers who entered before 15 September keep the stay they were given at immigration.
Need more than 30 days?
Many of our clients from the Gulf stay longer — for treatment, recovery or long family holidays. You have three main options:
- Ask for an extension in Thailand. Reports indicate that a further stay of up to 30 days may be requested at an immigration office, subject to approval. The detailed procedure had not been fully published at the time of writing.
- Apply for a tourist e-Visa before you travel. Through the official portal thaievisa.go.th, a tourist visa gives 60 days from arrival and can usually be extended by 30 days in Thailand.
- Coming for treatment? A medical treatment visa is the right route if treatment is the main purpose of your trip or your stay may exceed 30 days. Read our guide: medical treatment in Thailand.
Don't forget the TDAC
Whatever your visa, every foreign visitor must still complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within three days before arrival. See our step-by-step guide: how to fill in the TDAC.
